Strawberry Line Temporary Works Update

Published on 02/03/2017

Construction of Bristol Water’s new £27 million water infrastructure project is progressing well, with 14% of pipe in the ground already. We are currently laying pipe on three fronts; Barrow, Cleeve and Axbridge, with much more to come over the following months.

Last week Bristol Water met with the Strawberry Line Committee in Winscombe to discuss our plans for using parts of the cycle way to lay the pipe. Work on the pathway is split into two sections.

The diversion around the reservoir is currently being put in place before work can commence. Wales and West Utilities will need to upgrade their Gas Main before we can begin laying the new water main. Work is likely to commence in early March and the diversion will be in place for few months, to accommodate both Wales and West Utilities work and our pipe laying.

Shute Shelve Tunnel to Winscombe

Work on this part of the cycleway has been delayed due to a minor rock fall in the tunnel that coincidentally occurred during trial work and due to hibernating bats and dormice protection issues. Following some vegetation clearance over the coming week’s the diversion route will be constructed before the pipe laying work can commence in mid-April. This work is scheduled to be complete by mid-July.

Following both these areas of work we will be working with schools in the area to improve the Biodiversity of the cycleway, planting new trees and building bat boxes and bug hotels. This forms part of our ground-breaking Biodiversity Index Score programme that commits us to attempting to improve the biodiversity at all sites we affect.
