A Healthy Win for the Great Weston Ride

Published on 07/06/2018

Bristol’s Great Weston Ride, the mass-participation West Country cycling event taking place on Sunday 15th July 2018, is now officially an award-winning event after it was recognised for its significant contribution to health and wellbeing at the prestigious Bristol Life Awards recently.

The Awards are designed to celebrate the very best of Bristol across a range of categories and this year the GWR was in fact shortlisted for TWO Awards – as well as coming away as the overall winner in the Health & Wellbeing category, it was also in the running for the title of ‘Best Event’ for the second year in a row.

Darren McKimm, the Great Weston Ride organiser, commented:

“We’re incredibly pleased to have received this Award – Bristol is a fantastic place with so many good things going on and so many quality businesses and organisations, and we were delighted just to be among the finalists. There’s a rigorous judging process at the Awards so to come away with a wonderful trophy and a ‘Winners’ title to our name is quite an achievement and something we’re very proud of, especially in such an important category.

The valuable contribution that cycling can make to people’s health and wellbeing is well-documented and it’s a message that we’re always striving to convey to potential participants, so it’s fantastic to see the Great Weston Ride getting public recognition for its contribution in this area.

We’ve had lots of people telling us over the years how the GWR has helped and encouraged them to be more active and to feel fitter and healthier as a result, and that continues to be one of our main aims. We firmly believe that we ALL win if we can get more people cycling, and cycling more often.”

The Great Weston Ride is in its ninth year and its reputation is firmly established – the Ride appeals to cyclists of all abilities with its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and significant numbers of people travel to the area each year to take on this delightful West Country challenge.

The Ride also actively encourages charity fundraising and to date, riders have raised over £275,000 for charitable causes, with much of this going to support the Ride’s official charity partner Prostate Cancer UK. The event has sold out in advance every year to date and 2018 looks like closing earlier than ever, with previous riders’ comments making it clear that anyone who enters can expect both a great personal challenge AND a wonderful Somerset day to remember.
