nextbike bids a fond farewell to Bath

Next bike bath hire

Published on 11/02/2019

Leading bike share provider nextbike will cease operating in Bath now that its five-year contract has ended.

The bike share scheme launched in conjunction with Bath & North East Somerset Council in 2014 and was nextbike’s first fleet of bikes in the UK.

nextbike MD, Krysia Solheim, said they would be sorry to leave but would be excited to see what the future holds for bike share in Bath.

“As our first UK scheme in 2014, Bath will always have a special place in our hearts. Since then we have launched in an additional seven UK locations to date, with three more being added this year, making our network of bikes one of the most extensive in the UK.

“We will be sad to leave Bath, but our contract is now at an end and the time is right for us to go. It has been a pleasure to work alongside the council, and our local service provider, Take Charge Bikes, during our time in the city.

“We would like to thank our loyal Bath customers, who cycled 61,500km over the past five years – which is about 1.5 times the circumference of the globe – and wish the city well in the future.”

Bikes will no longer be available for hire after February 8th. All 100 bikes and 15 docking stations will be removed from the city over the coming weeks.

nextbike Bath customers will be reimbursed for any annual membership fees they have already paid.

Councillor Mark Shelford, Bath & North East Somerset Council’s cabinet member for Transport and Environment, said:

“Our successful partnership with nextbike has helped to change attitudes to cycling. When nextbike first came to Bath, it replaced a very inefficient system and rapidly became a fixture within Bath.

However, as technology has progressed it was appropriate to review if new systems could meet the demand from residents and visitors for a simple, easy to use alternative.

We are delighted that electric bike hire will be coming to the City this summer.”
