What is a bike hangar?

A bike hangar is a covered, lockable and secure pod, which sits on the road, and can securely hold 6 bikes. It takes up about the same amount of space on the road as a parked car.

For people who cannot easily store a bike at home or lack suitable space for this, a bike hangar can provide them with a secure and convenient way to park their bike that is also cheap. This allows them to ride a bike for more of their journeys and reduces their need to rely on motorised transport.

Bristol’s first bike hangar was installed in April 2015 by a group of Windmill Hill residents and was a community-led initiative. Since then, 71 more have been installed around the city.

There is a small annual rental charge to hire one of the 6 spaces inside a bike hangar, part of a membership that is renewable each year.

Bristol’s bike hangar rental scheme has been funded by various government grants and has been delivered by Bristol City Council and the West of England Mayoral Authority. Ongoing maintenance of units and co-ordination of the rental scheme is arranged by LockIt-Safe.

Future funding

Currently, Bristol City Council doesn’t have any immediate plans to deliver more sites around the city. However, this may change if further funding becomes available.

We are therefore not accepting any new applications for installing further bike hangars.
