Cycling and walking – just what the doctor ordered

Local people could soon be ‘prescribed’ to go cycling and walking by their doctors thanks to a new programme backed by West of England Metro Mayor Dan Norris.

The GP Prescribing Programme will link NHS patients to walking groups and cycle loan schemes.

The West of England Combined Authority, led by Metro Mayor Dan Norris, has secured £170,000 to enable trial projects to take place in Bath and North East Somerset and Bristol.

The plan is to tackle key health issues including obesity, poor health, inactivity and loneliness – issues which have also been a factor for those hardest hit by the Covid 19 pandemic.

West of England Mayor Dan Norris said:

Going for a walk or getting on your bike are good for both your physical and mental health, so this could be just what the doctor ordered.

As I know well when I take Angel for a walk in the park, I feel better both from the exercise but also from sharing experiences, seeing, meeting and listening to other people.

This is an innovative plan to help make local people healthier and happier
