Views are being sought from four communities in south Bristol on possible locations for 21 new cycle hangars, to add to over 70 others already in place across the city.
This July, Bristol City Council is writing to residents across Southville, Windmill Hill, Totterdown and Bedminster, who live near suggested locations to gather views on the best places for them.
Intended for nearby residents, the cycle hangars offer secure storage for up to six bicycles and take up roughly the same space as a parking bay on the road.
The suggested locations have been identified using requests submitted on an interactive map, alongside waiting lists for existing cycle hangars on or near those streets. The proposals are intended to allow more local people to access secure cycle storage close to home.
Councillor Ed Plowden, Chair of the Transport and Connectivity Committee, said:
Having somewhere safe and convenient to keep a bike can make a big difference, especially for people who don’t have space to store one at home. We know they are popular as places were snapped up very quickly last time and we still have waiting lists for them.
These new cycle hangars would help more people across south Bristol choose cycling for short, everyday journeys -something that’s good for their health and wellbeing, while also helping to ease congestion and reduce air pollution locally.
We want to hear what residents think before any decisions are made, and I’d encourage everyone who receives a letter to respond if they support or have concerns about the proposed location of a cycle hangar in their area.
The deadline to respond to the letter, by either emailing the council at transport.engagement@bristol.gov.uk or writing to Transport Engagement, PO Box 3399, Bristol BS1 9NE, is 17 August 2026.
Based on the response to the letters, a final shortlist will be put forward, and the council will hold a formal Traffic Regulation Order consultation on each of these, with the aim to install the cycle hangars by the end of 2026.
The cycle hangars are being funded through the Active Travel Fund, secured by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.
